Underpainting

Today was one of the first days in a couple weeks where I didn't have to get started on some homework right away. I thought of all the personal drawings and painting experiments I could get done today and post on yonder blog, but then took a look around my apartment. Yes, there has been quite a few busy weeks... and my home shows it. So instead of basking in the glory of personal painting, I cleaned. All day. All friggin' day. Only half of the apartment is clean but I'm callin' it quits for today. My tornado of a bedroom/studio will have to wait.

So instead of fun experimentation posts, here is the underpainting for the next painting I'm working on for class.

Hopefully it's dry tomorrow so I can get back to working on it.

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Preview Friday

I'm in the midst of working on another painting so won't have much for today. I will give a sneak peek at the thumbnail for the painting, though!

I'll be going with #1 and going for an eery, mysterious feeling. My reference comes from a photo shoot at the Piedmont Cemetery and I am looking forward to working on this one.

Also, in case any of you don't know or haven't checked it out in awhile, I've added some new art for sale at my Etsy shop. Please feel free to take a gander.

This drawing is for sale right now!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

(somewhat) Speed Paint

Spent just shy of two hours on this... Definitely want to work with oils in Painter further! Perhaps without trying to be speedy...

Analog Painting

I mentioned Wednesday about another digital speedpainting, but instead realized I needed the time to work on a physical painting due for class Tuesday. Nothing's a bigger bitch then commuting with a 24x36 wet canvas, so I said fuck that, this shit needs to be dry (btw, I'm sure there are bigger bitchier things, but that one at least makes my list... that is until the canvases get bigger).

Without further ado, a painting!

In process drawing and laying it out.

Laid down those fours.

Underpainting complete!

Initially, painting this large a canvas propped on my drawing table proved to be a bit difficult, but I eventually got the hang of it. An easel would still be nice, though. Alas.

Finished! Now to let it dry. There's still something about it that irks me, but I thought it was at a decent enough point. Also I feel like I need some time away from it to see what it is that's bothering me, but that'll have to wait until after Tuesday.

Ah, booty.

Digital Sketch

I need and want to practice in Painter more, drawing and coloring digitally--especially drawing, tho. I usually draw and scan that drawing in, coloring digitally. Very rarely.. actually, never really, do I start a drawing digitally and do so all the way through. So in my efforts of learning, I decided to mess around more with the Real 2B Pencil in Painter 12. I also gave myself a one hour time limit.

I used a reference photo I'd taken of my friend Chelsea (who just so happens to have her own blog you can check out if interested here). We took a bunch of photos in the gorgeous Piedmont Cemetery here in Oakland for one of my painting assignments and I decided to make her a fairy!

Now, there's a lot wrong with that sketch right there. lol I wanted to practice a time limit, or "speed drawing' (one hour isn't all that speedy at all, but for me it sure is!) and definitely will continue to do so in the future. I think having a time limit is a good exercise since I'm just sketching anyways.

I wanted to apply color, but ran out of time. I might go in and edit and work on this more for Friday's post, or I might just do a speed paint portrait instead.

Working digitally, here I come!

Also, btw, I listened to Florence + The Machine's "Ceremonials" while sketching. Her albums have a tendency to really grow on me. When I first heard "Ceremonials" I thought the album wasn't nearly as good as "Lungs" (which I still think is true) but I really enjoy the album after listening to it a few times. Her music is very inspirational for me when drawing and painting.

Snow White and the Line Drawing

Just a line drawing I revisited and reworked from an old pencil drawing.

Yesterday I passed my Midpoint Review and am approved to start working on my thesis!!!
This means I need to up the ante and draw, draw, draw and paint, paint, paint much more. I may just add one more day to my blog posting schedule to give me more incentive for practicing. Stay tuned for more details.

Dany and Drogon

As anyone who knows me or has been following my blog, I am a huge A Song of Ice and Fire fan. Henceforth, last semester when we could illustrate anything for Digital Painting I went to one of my favorite characters.

This was the original drawing done on bristol before I took it into the computer and expanded on Drogon some more, changing the size and proportion of the illustration. Much was learned.

I tweaked the drawing quite a bit and this was my first time ever drawing a dragon, so it was a definite learning experience. Will practice dragon-drawing more in the future!

And the finished product! One breast flying in the breeze. ~_^
