Can you tell I'm not the biggest fan of this past season? Only three more episodes to get through.
(If you're new to the blog, the whole "pause and draw" idea I got from an illustrator friend. I watch the show, pause where I think is a good scene, draw for 10 minutes, and move on. It's really good practice for me to sketch quickly and is interesting to break down the shot composition of the show/film as you draw it.)
Last year I finished my Thousand Head Drawing Challenge, then decided to begin a 500 Figure Drawing Challenge. Hopefully I'll finish by the end of 2015!
only 7/500 -- there's a lot more to draw in the upcoming 361 days!
This year I'll be in a better position to focus on creating more personal illustrations and am going to ramp up promotional mailers and wooing clients. Here's to a productive year!
I'm participating in a fun drawing challenge called Stickathon! For the entire month of September you draw on a post-it/sticky note each day. I'm going to stick them around the Bay as often as I can - most likely along my commute.
I did it! Here are the final best fifteen in the last hundred of the one thousand head-drawing challenge! It's taken me just about two years to complete, but it's been worth every effort. Progress photos ahead!

The best 15 outta the next hundred heads have been finished tonight! I'll be photoshopping these guys together and share them soon. Only one hundred left to a thousand!
I need and want to practice in Painter more, drawing and coloring digitally--especially drawing, tho. I usually draw and scan that drawing in, coloring digitally. Very rarely.. actually, never really, do I start a drawing digitally and do so all the way through. So in my efforts of learning, I decided to mess around more with the Real 2B Pencil in Painter 12. I also gave myself a one hour time limit.
I used a reference photo I'd taken of my friend Chelsea (who just so happens to have her own blog you can check out if interested here). We took a bunch of photos in the gorgeous Piedmont Cemetery here in Oakland for one of my painting assignments and I decided to make her a fairy!
Now, there's a lot wrong with that sketch right there. lol I wanted to practice a time limit, or "speed drawing' (one hour isn't all that speedy at all, but for me it sure is!) and definitely will continue to do so in the future. I think having a time limit is a good exercise since I'm just sketching anyways.
I wanted to apply color, but ran out of time. I might go in and edit and work on this more for Friday's post, or I might just do a speed paint portrait instead.
Working digitally, here I come!
Also, btw, I listened to Florence + The Machine's "Ceremonials" while sketching. Her albums have a tendency to really grow on me. When I first heard "Ceremonials" I thought the album wasn't nearly as good as "Lungs" (which I still think is true) but I really enjoy the album after listening to it a few times. Her music is very inspirational for me when drawing and painting.
Nothing too intensive to post today, but I did do some sketching last night. I often get bogged down by assignments and painting a lot recently, forgetting to take the time to leisurely sketch. It's very important, I think, and rejuvenates my spirit.
Man tits and nipples. Still elude me. Also still working on drawing more manly men.. believe me, years ago all my dudes looked like ladies.
Trying to remember rules and practice foreshortening--both these sketches without referring to any reference but my mind. It's getting better and it was fun to just sketch whatever... but those boobs are bothering me. Also.. that foremost shoulder should probably overlap more.... aaah! Practice, practice, practice!
