Inktober 2015: Paranormal Explorations, Batch One

I've been participating in this year's Inktober pretty well so far--only missed a few days and caught up right away! I decided to theme my illustrations for Inktober under the paranormal and supernatural. I am personally very intrigued and drawn to this subject matter so I knew it would be enticing for me to draw something new from within those realms each day. Also, there's Halloween! Who doesn't love creepy stuff in October? I also decided to standardize my sizes for ease of creation and sale. I'm working on 4.5x6 in. bristol board. Each Inktober drawing is available for sale for $25, including shipping! If you'd like to keep an eye on my Inktober originals for sale, follow my Facebook event.

Now, without further ado, let the creepiness begin...

black-eyed children

Victorian-era ghost

Nosferatu

ghosts in a graveyard... classic Halloween iconography!

shadow people

animal psi

doppleganger

ectoplasm

deva, or nature spirit

sleep paralysis

bloody mary

vampire

graveyard mystery

faceless woman ghost

pumpkins and a black cat... another classic Halloween iconography!

If you'd like to check out the rest of the month's Inktober drawings, you can also follow my Facebook fan page or stalk me on Instagram @datbootietho

I'll post the rest of the Inktober drawings in November. Enjoy the rest of October whether you're participating in Inktober, basking in the autumn season (of which I am very jealous of you since I'm in the constant sun of LA), or preparing your costume for upcoming parties and trick-or-treating!

Getting Pumped for APE 2015!!!

Booth confirmed and deadlines nearing, I'm excited for APE (Alternative Press Expo) this year and you should be too!!! Why? Well, obviously, COMICS. Then even more blatant... MY COMIC! I'll have my first issue of War Days there, self-published in all of its blasphemous glory.

So many nuns...

I'm finishing layout and printing is next week for my comic. Not only will I have my comic to sell, but also a sweet collaborative zine with my tablemates Allentine and Andy Malpica (along with some other badass illustrator contributors). Our theme is TV shows and movies with animal characters. I illustrated The X-Files and The IT Crowd.

Of course Mulder is a fox.

Chinchilla Moss

So much critter fun...

Not only that, but I'll have prints, originals, and necklaces and keychains!

Get these bad boys.

More necklaces in production...

So clear your calendar the first weekend of October and come out to APE!!!

Game of Thrones Pause and Draw: Season 5 Episodes 6 & 7

S05E06

S05E07

Can you tell I'm not the biggest fan of this past season? Only three more episodes to get through.

(If you're new to the blog, the whole "pause and draw" idea I got from an illustrator friend. I watch the show, pause where I think is a good scene, draw for 10 minutes, and move on. It's really good practice for me to sketch quickly and is interesting to break down the shot composition of the show/film as you draw it.)

Sacred Black: An Art Order Challenge Entry

I've been following The Art Order for awhile now and have wanted to participate in the challenges, but hadn't yet... until NOW! This challenge was a cover for F(r)iction #2, an art and literary collection. The guidelines were the color blue, surreal in nature, and inspired by the mysteries within the murky depths of the ocean. It was time to get sketching!

I've been reading Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan, so of course the mysteries of the cosmos was on my mind. I think it's interesting how there are so many unknowns in the vastness of both space and the oceans right here on our blue planet. I started sketching a concept of a woman looking up into the sky which would transition to a strange, deep-sea mermaid within her imagination.

In the book, Sagan mentions the idea of "sacred black" and I was hooked on that phrase. He connects the adventure, awe and draw of the blue skies on our planet to the vast blackness of space. The chapter also goes into the different colors of the skies on various planets and how color works, so of course I was intrigued. I had my title. I still wanted to work in the girl staring at the stars and sky, but was finding it difficult to work as a cover. I was also concerned my concept of the mysteries of space and the ocean being connected might not be read well.

Some mermaid sketches and notes.

I decided to scrap the girl staring at the sky and instead focus on space meshing with sea. I'm also interested in black holes and the many unknowns about that phenomena, so I decided that would be the space connection. This way the illustration would focus on the deep sea mermaid and not be torn between two main characters.

Some final notes and planning.

Then it was drawing time!

Coffee is essential

I wasn't quite sure what pose I wanted the mermaid to be in, so after sketching some small thumbnails of mermaids in movement, I decided to get up and take some poses!

Posing. Posing with my arm. Posing...

Sketching from my references.

Then many coffees later....

The finished drawing!

Once I liked the drawing, it was time to ink.

Finished ink.

Then... PHOTOSHOP TIME.

I listened to a lot of Coast to Coast AM.

And voila! The finished product!

Dat bioluminescence.

The Art Order challenge is still open for two more days, until June 14th! So if you have the time or a piece ready that fits, submit your work!
